Obesity
In recent years, obesity has increased in every state in the United States. More than half of all adults are considered overweight or obese. For some of these individuals, changes in diet and activity habits are the best approach for achieving a healthy weight. For those with morbid obesity, these traditional methods are not enough. One way to tell if you are obese is by checking your body mass index (BMI).
BMI is a calculation using height and weight to assess the severity of obesity. If your BMI is 40 or more, you are considered to have morbid obesity, which may make you a candidate for bariatric surgery. If you have a BMI of 35 to 40 and have serious, obesity-related health problems, you also may be a candidate for this surgery. Health problems include severe sleep apnea, diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure.
