My Areas of Practice

Gynecologic surgery: Dr. Banfield specializes in minimally invasive surgery, including total laparoscopic hysterectomy, vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopy, and office hysteroscopy for diagnosis and treatment of menstrual disorders. He has lectured on contraception and minimally invasive surgery, trained other physicians on these techniques, and offers Essure permanent contraception and Novasure endometrial ablation in the office setting.

Obstetrics: Dr. Banfield spends about half of his practice caring for both high and low risk pregnancies. He encourages VBAC in appropriate candidates, and vaginal delivery of twins.

"The most important element of my care is making sure patients understand their problem, options for treating it, and the advantages or disadvantages of each alternative. In the same way an attorney or an accountant helps clients understand legal or tax questions, my goal is to provide information that is easily understood so patients can make informed decisions that best meet their needs."

Personal

I grew up in Rochester, Minnesota and am delighted to have returned home to be close to my family. I enjoy fly fishing and golf in the summer, skiing in the winter, and cooking year-round. We live in Edina where my wife is busy decorating and updating a 1920s home, and our 2 children enjoy the nearby parks. I chose OB/GYN among the specialties because it was a unique mix of surgery and outpatient work. Pregnancy and childbirth are important transitions in a woman's life, and I find being part of that journey extremely rewarding.
