My Areas of Practice
Nissa Erickson Geisness's passion for midwifery began early in her life, when she was present at the midwife-attended birth of her younger sister, Kate, after tagging along to the prenatal visits and Lamaze classes. She is dedicated to advocating for women and their families, by empowering them to make their own informed health care decisions, and by providing sensitive patient-centered care, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic situations. She is respectful of the unique needs and choices of women throughout pregnancy and birth, and through various life stages, from adolescence to menopause. Her clinical/research interests include preventive women's health, adolescent care (both gynecology and teen pregnancy), patient and family centered care, water birth, skin-to-skin contact after birth, and breastfeeding.

Nissa has spent over a decade working in women's and children's health. She is a board certified nurse midwife and nurse practitioner with masters degrees from University of Colorado in both the Midwifery and the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner programs. She has bachelors degrees in Nursing and Women's Studies from St. Olaf College. During this time, she also studied health care in India, and two years later, spent the winter volunteering at a children's orphange in Central America. She launched her RN nursing career right here at Methodist's Family Birth Center in 2000. She moved with her husband to Colorado in 2004, where she helped open University of Colorado Hospital's Birth Center while attending graduate school. Her midwifery career began with a private practice clinic associated with Littleton Hospital in Colorado for two years, before moving back to MN. She is ecstatic to be part of the Park Nicollet system again.
After eight years in Colorado, Nissa and her husband are so happy to be back in Minnesota with family, especially after the birth of their son (at Methodist with the Park Nicollet Midwives). Her family extends to furry kids--she has adopted two retired greyhounds, and has one rambunctious rescued kitty. She loves traveling, animals, live music, and anything outdoors, especially camping and skiing in Colorado, and spending time up north at her cabin. In her spare time she tries out Food Network recipes, volunteers for greyhound adoption and hopes to cheer on the Twins for a winning season.
