My Areas of Practice

My interests and expertise include diagnosing and treating many rheumatic diseases including, but not limited to: Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Inflammatory arthritis, Lupus, Sjogren's, Scleroderma, (other) Connective tissue diseases, Gout, Pseudogout, Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Inflammatory muscle diseases, and Vasculitis.

I typically do not provide long term care for chronic low back pain, chronic pain syndromes, or fibromyalgia. These are conditions which may be better served by other specialties including physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as pain clinics.

Additional interests for me include biologic therapies used to treat rheumatic diseases. I strive to provide patients with the most up to date education materials and treatment approaches. Injection therapies for arthritis such as "cortisone shots" and viscosupplements are tools I regularly use to reduce pain and inflammation for patients with arthritis, bursitis, and tenodnitis.

Personal

I was born in England, grew up in Montrose, Colorado, and attended high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachussetts. Outside of medicine, I cherish spending time with family and friends. My wife and I have 3 dogs, all miniature dachshunds. I'm a sports fan, especially when it comes to college hockey, where I enjoy following my alma mater Colorado College, but also cheering on the Gophers. I keep trying to win my fantasy football league, without much success yet. Hobbies include gardening, sailing, hiking, and skiing. I've volunteered at the American College of Rheumatology, doing a 3 year term on the Committee for Rheumatologic Care. Our department also does clinical trials where I've served as an investigator on a number of rheumatoid arthritis studies. I am active as a speaker for CME conferences for primary care physicians on Rheumatology topics.
