Risk assessment process

Photo of a gene.Cancer genetic risk assessments involve these steps.

1
You will review your family’s history of cancer with the genetic counselor. This may include a review of medical records to clarify the types of cancer and age of onset.

2
We assess the likelihood of hereditary cancer in your family and the likelihood of developing cancer.

3
If appropriate, genetic testing options are discussed. The counselor will explain options, costs, risks, benefits and limitations of these tests.

4
If you have a genetic test, the counselor will help you understand your test results. Follow-up visits will be scheduled with an oncologist to discuss options for screening and risk reduction.

Completing the cancer risk assessment process typically requires two to four visits. If you are a new patient learn more about what to expect and what Park Nicollet Cancer Center can offer you.
