Current studies
International Diabetes Center frequently recruits for short-term research opportunities. These studies usually involve just one visit of a few hours or less to the center, and may test an investigational meter, new test strip, lancing device or other products. Many times, participants will receive compensation for their time and travel.
To be added to our research database and contacted when a research study is available, call 952-993-3500 or toll-free at 888-825-6315.
Check out our current studies, listed below.
1. Uncovering Sleep Apnea
Many people with type 2 diabetes have undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Find out if you may have OSA by using a simple home-screening device. If the test is positive, you can help determine if treating OSA may lead to possible improvements in diabetes control by participating in a new research study.
You may qualify if you:
- Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- Are at least 18 years old
- Have an A1c between 6.5% and 8.5%
- Currently are not taking insulin
- Have not been diagnosed with OSA
Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:
- Loud snoring
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Tossing or turning at night
- Gasping or not breathing at night
- Waking up un-refreshed
- Memory problems
- Morning or night headaches
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.

2. Diabetes and Heart Disease
We invite you to participate in a new research study; so that together we can learn what benefits diabetes medications may have on heart disease. In this study, we will compare the impact of an FDA-approved, type 2 diabetes medication on cardiovascular outcomes to that of a placebo.
You may qualify if you:
- Are over 50 years old
- Have type 2 diabetes with an A1c between 6.5-8%
- Have vascular disease
- Are taking Metformin, Actos, Glipizide, Glyburide, or Glimepiride alone or in dual combination with each other
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
For more information, call 952-993-3267 or e-mail anne.gilsdorf@parknicollet.com.
3. Do you have type 1 diabetes?
If so, you are invited to participate in a clinical research study to determine what new technologies may work best for treating patients with type 1 diabetes.
This study will include the use of an investigational insulin combination product, which contains both a long-acting and rapid-acting insulin.
You may qualify if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have had type 1 diabetes for 12 months or longer
- Currently are taking both long and short-acting insulin daily (not on a pump)
- Have an A1c of 7-10%
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
For more information, call 952-993-3267 or e-mail anne.gilsdorf@parknicollet.com.
4. Type 2 Diabetes Study
You are invited to participate in a clinical research study examining the effects of an investigational medicine for type 2 diabetes.
This research will help determine what treatment works best for controlling blood sugar when used with an SU (Sulfonylurea), Glipizide, Glyburide, Glimepiride only or an SU plus Metformin.
You may qualify if you:
- Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- Are 18-75 years old
- Have an A1c between 7-10%
- Taking an SU (Sulfonylurea) Glipizide, Glyburide, Glimepiride alone or taking an SU plus Metformin
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
For more information, call 952-993-3267 or e-mail anne.gilsdorf@parknicollet.com.
5. Welchol® Type 2 Diabetes Study
Consider participating in a new research study so that together we can learn what new technologies and medications may work best for treating people with diabetes.
In this study, we will examine glucose control in persons with type 2 diabetes when adding an FDA approved medication Welchol®, which can be used with your current diabetes medications. This medication has been shown to reduce elevated LDL-cholesterol levels and to improve glucose control when used in combination with metformin and sulfonylureas.
You will also use continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) at critical points during the study to monitor the glucose patterns associated with this treatment.
You may qualify if you:
- Are 18-75 years old
- Have type 2 diabetes
- Have an A1c of 7-9.0%
- Currently take at least one of the following diabetes medications:
- metformin (Glucophage®)
- sulfonylurea (glimepiride [Amaryl®], glipizide [Glucotrol® or Glucotrol XL®], glyburide)
- a combination of metformin and sulfonylurea: Glucovance®, or Metaglip)
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.

Help us provide better care for those, like you, living with diabetes.
6. Do you have type 2 diabetes and take only metformin for your diabetes?
If so, you are invited to participate in a clinical research study testing an investigational product.
You may qualify if you:
- Are 18-70 years old
- Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least six months
- Are taking only metformin for your diabetes
- Have been on the same dose of metformin for the past three months
- Have an HbA1c 7-10.0%
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
