Exercising safety tips

When you are ready to exercise, check your blood glucose level. You may need to adjust your carbohydrate intake, depending on your blood glucose and type of activity you plan to do. Here are some more hints for keeping your blood glucose in check when you exercise.

  • Always carry some form of carbohydrate with you in case your blood glucose goes too low.
  • Test your blood glucose before you begin. Add more carbohydrate food if you need to.
  • With type 2 diabetes, if your blood glucose level is more than 300 mg/dL, monitor your level to see the effects of activity. If your level goes higher, you may need to consider a change in your current diabetes treatment. Talk to your diabetes care team about any treatment changes.
  • With type 1 diabetes, avoid activity if your blood glucose level is more than 250 mg/dL or if you have ketones.
  • Avoid exercise when you are ill.
