Treating type 2 diabetes

The treatment foundation for type 2 diabetes is a food and physical activity plan, with diabetes pills and insulin often used as well.

Treatment plans are selected based on the individual needs of each person with diabetes. The best treatment keeps blood glucose levels on target.

Over time, diabetes causes changes in the body's cells and the pancreas. These are natural changes that happen when you have diabetes, which is why many different treatment options are available for people with type 2 diabetes. As these changes occur, treatment plans need to change, too. Medication may need to be added or adjusted.

A food and activity plan is the heart of diabetes treatment. Medications also may be used, and include diabetes pills and injections to help lower blood glucose. Insulin injections help glucose get into the body’s cells, while pills work to lower blood glucose in other ways. Pills and insulin can be used alone or in different combinations.
