Medical care

We believe IMPROVED PHYSICAL HEALTH is needed to heal from an eating disorder.

Medical complications of eating disorders affect every system in the body. First, patients start feeling the impact on their bodies through low energy, decreased body temperature, low sexual desire and interrupted menstrual cycles. Eventually vital organs, such as the heart and kidneys, can shrink and become impaired. If left untreated, many of these issues may become life-threatening.

We take our patients’ physical health as seriously as their mental health. Our medical doctors are trained in eating disorders, and we are one of few programs in the country that offers comprehensive medical care services. Through complete medical evaluation, laboratory work and additional testing, we learn the eating disorder’s impact on patients’ physical health. We work with the patient, family and care team to treat these issues, including abuse of over-the-counter products, compulsive exercise and insulin manipulation for those who have diabetes.

Our ultimate goal is for our patients to gain the medical stability they need to work on recovery.
