Nutrition

We believe BALANCED NUTRITION IS ESSENTIAL to eating-disorder recovery and quality of life.

Nourishment is the foundation for clear thinking, emotion regulation and physical health. Patients need stable nutrition and physical health before they can engage in therapeutic recovery and rebuild relationships with family and friends.

Our program focuses on meal planning and experiential learning, not calorie counting and numbers. We help patients develop a balanced meal plan that includes all foods and promotes nonjudgmental attitudes toward food. We understand our patients will face pressures about food and body image. At Melrose Institute, they gain practical experience in making decisions about balanced nutrition in real world situations. We also encourage parents, spouses, siblings and friends to learn tools to support patients.

Our ultimate goal is for our patients to develop normal eating habits – and reclaim the vitality needed to live well.

Nutrition goals

Melrose Institute patients will be able to:

  • attain and maintain a healthy and natural body weight
  • develop healthy eating habits through meal planning
  • practice normal eating
  • gain decision-making skills to use when reintegrating into their environment
  • use support people to assist in recovery
  • reclaim a healthy relationship with food
  • apply individual nutrition recommendations when eating disorders are combined with multiple health conditions
