Compulsive exercise

When athletes cross the line of excessive exercise and dieting, an eating disorder may be their biggest competitor. Our care team includes physical therapists dedicated to helping people who exercise too much.

"People who participate in sports that emphasize weight, such as wrestling or gymnastics, or focus on the individual, such as cross-country, are at risk for developing an eating disorder," says Lois Neaton, lead physical therapist, Melrose Institute.

Our physical therapists help people who exercise too much.Signs to look for include:

  • loss of enjoyment from exercise
  • enduring pain
  • inability to rest and heal

Our physical therapist puts them at ease and explains that they don't have to stop activity permanently. As they go through treatment, we help them establish a healthier relationship with activity.
