Heartburn

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the lower chest, behind the breastbone. It may be accompanied by nausea, bloating, belching, or a sour or bitter taste in the throat and mouth. Usually heartburn occurs while you are lying down or after you eat a large meal. Heartburn may also be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Heartburn
Occasional heartburn relieved by self-care suggestions Symptoms can usually be treated at home. If symptoms persist, you should call your doctor for advice.
Heartburn in a person taking heart or asthma medications, antispasmodics, antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives, or birth control pills Symptoms may be treated at home or they may require a visit to your doctor. Usually you and your doctor need to share additional information about your condition to decide what is best for you.
Heartburn with loss of appetite and fatigue  Symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor. When you call to make an appointment, your doctor will help you determine how soon you need to be seen.
Heartburn with black or bloody stools  Symptoms in this category are serious and should usually be seen within 2 hours. Depending on your health insurance, you may choose to call your doctor to determine if you should be seen in the doctor’s office, in an urgent care center, or in an emergency room.
Heartburn and vomiting blood Symptoms in this category are serious and should usually be seen within 2 hours. Depending on your health insurance, you may choose to call your doctor to determine if you should be seen in the doctor’s office, in an urgent care center, or in an emergency room.
Signs related to heart problems: chest pain that goes into neck, jaw, back, arms, or shoulders; constant, worsening pain with sweating; shortness of breath; nausea; or vomiting Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment.
