Hives

Hives occur when an allergic reaction prompts cells to release histamine, a chemical found in the skin. The histamine causes nearby blood vessels to dilate (open up). Fluid leaks out and collects under the skin in a raised, flushed, itchy bump called a hive.

What to do About Hives
Hives responding well to self-care Symptoms can usually be treated at home. If symptoms persist, you should call your doctor for advice.

Widespread hives over body Symptoms in this category are serious and should usually be seen within 2 hours. Depending on your health insurance, you may choose to call your doctor to determine if you should be seen in the doctor’s office, in an urgent care center, or in an emergency room.
Extensive hives with swelling around the face and in the throat and mouth; difficulty breathing Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment.
