Causes
Some people are born with nails that have a tendency to become ingrown, but the most common causes of ingrown toenails are wearing shoes that don’t fit well and trimming nails improperly. An injury to a toenail may also cause it to become ingrown.
Treatment
If the problem is mild, you may be able to use self-care. But if the pain is severe or getting worse, see your doctor.
Doctors usually treat ingrown toenails with a minor surgical procedure. After numbing your toe, your doctor will cut the nail and remove the part that’s grown into the skin. In some cases, doctors use a laser or chemical on the area to prevent that part of the nail from growing back.
Self-Care
-
Soak your foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day. After soaking, put a small piece of sterile cotton under the edge of the nail that’s ingrown. This can help the nail start to grow above the skin, rather than into it.
-
Use an antibiotic ointment on the area.
-
Wear wide or open-toed shoes until your toe feels better.
