Vomiting in Adults

Vomiting is usually the result of an infection located anywhere from the stomach to the colon. More rarely, it is caused by a bacterial infection that would benefit from medical treatment. But in most cases an upset stomach is a simple virus that will disappear by itself in a few days.

Vomiting in Adults
Vomiting caused by motion sickness, eating too much, drinking too much alcohol, or stress Symptoms can usually be treated at home. If symptoms persist, you should call your doctor for advice.
Vomiting in patient with diabetes, or patient with other chronic disease, and inability to keep medication down Symptoms may be treated at home or they may require a visit to your doctor. Usually you and your doctor need to share additional information about your condition to decide what is best for you.
Vomiting for more than 48 hours, or inability to keep fluids down for 24 hours  Symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor. When you call to make an appointment, your doctor will help you determine how soon you need to be seen.
Severe, constant abdominal pain or abdominal trauma, or vomiting more than two times following head injury Symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor. When you call to make an appointment, your doctor will help you determine how soon you need to be seen.
Signs of dehydration, decreased urination, dry mouth, change in mental or functional activities in elderly person Symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor. When you call to make an appointment, your doctor will help you determine how soon you need to be seen.
Vomiting with headache and stiff neck  Symptoms in this category are serious and should usually be seen within 2 hours. Depending on your health insurance, you may choose to call your doctor to determine if you should be seen in the doctor’s office, in an urgent care center, or in an emergency room. 
Vomiting large amounts of blood or a substance that looks like coffee grounds Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment.
