What to do About Burns
Burn affecting only the outer layer of skin (may be some pain and tenderness) Symptoms can usually be treated at home. If symptoms persist, you should call your doctor for advice.
First- and second-degree burns greater than 2 inches in diameter Symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor. When you call to make an appointment, your doctor will help you determine how soon you need to be seen.
Burns involving groin or buttocks Symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor. When you call to make an appointment, your doctor will help you determine how soon you need to be seen.
First- and second-degree burns that cover more than 10 percent of the body Symptoms in this category are serious and should usually be seen within 2 hours. Depending on your health insurance, you may choose to call your doctor to determine if you should be seen in the doctor’s office, in an urgent care center, or in an emergency room.
Third-degree burns or burns caused by an explosion Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment. 
Burns with smoke inhalation Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment.
Significant burns to face and neck Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment.
First- and second-degree burns that cover more than 30 percent of the body Symptoms in this category are life threatening and require immediate medical treatment.
