Drowning/Near Drowning

Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States. When a person drowns, oxygen doesn’t get to the brain. Drowning can occur whether or not the lungs fill up with water. Near drowning happens after a long time under water. Being under water, or submerged, keeps oxygen from reaching the lungs and other vital organs, including the brain, which can lead to brain injury.
