First four hours after vaginal delivery
- Walk with help or by yourself.
- Learn to use comfort measures for perineal stitches or uterine cramping as needed.
- Urinate without difficulty.
- Adjust discomfort by taking pain medications, as needed.
- Recognize cues that mean your baby is hungry, and begin feeding when you notice these cues.
- Begin caring for your baby by yourself. This includes holding, feeding, changing diapers, keeping track of urination and bowel movements, bathing, dressing and bundling, soothing, positioning and burping.
- Eat a nutritious meal. Begin drinking eight ounces of fluid every two hours.
If questions arise once you are home, contact your obstetrician or certified nurse-midwife.
