Eating Disorders Institute is dedicated to research efforts to understand and improve the lives and care of patients with eating disorders.

Current research

  • Stages of change as a predictor of treatment outcomes for eating disorders.
  • Cross-cultural differences between high school-age males and females with regard to body dissatisfaction and other eating disorder risks
    (10-year follow-up study).
  • Effectiveness of listening to music to manage stress and anxiety in eating disorder patients during meals.
  • Recognition of patterns in women recovering from an eating disorder.
  • Anna Westin House residential outcomes study.
  • The impact of appearance-related teasing on adolescents seeking treatment for an eating disorder versus a community sample of adolescents.
  • Do patients experiencing an early onset (age 10 to 12 years) of an eating disorder differ clinically from patients whose onset occurs during adolescence or young adulthood?
  • Treatment of binge eating disorder.
  • Do female patients identifying themselves as athletes differ clinically from nonathlete females in eating disorder evaluations?
  • Serotonin mood and cognition in anorexia nervosa.

Completed research

  • Reliability and Validity of a New Eating Disorder Stage of Change Tool. Completed 2006, submitted for publication.
  • Recovery in adult verses youth onset anorexia. Poster presentation, Academy for Eating Disorders meeting June 2006.

Future areas of study

  • Recovery rates of patients discharged from an inpatient or partial hospital eating disorder program (one year to 10 years of follow-up)
  • Incident of disordered eating in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes
