What happens after the initial assessment?

The assessment will help determine the best program to meet individual needs.

Inpatient treatment program

If the assessment team recommends our inpatient program, following the initial assessment, patients will have a break for lunch. For lunch, patients can go to the cafeteria, located on the first floor of Methodist Hospital (Suite 1-530). Patients must stay on the hospital grounds during this break. After lunch, they check in at the desk on the eighth floor of Methodist Hospital, where the inpatient program is located. Once patients check in, they receive an orientation to the inpatient unit. Patients are not allowed to go home and gather their things before being admitted. We recommend that a family member or friend do this for patients during their first day. Inpatient orientation will cover this and other information.

Partial hospitalization program

If the assessment team recommends our partial program, patients can return to the waiting room. An Eating Disorders Institute team member will meet the patients there and inform them when treatment will begin and what to do if the partial program is full.

Intensive outpatient program

The intensive outpatient program is used as a transition from our partial program to our outpatient program, so it is not recommended at the initial assessment.

Outpatient program

If the assessment team recommends our outpatient program, patients meet with a care manager after the initial assessment, who will assist the patient throughout treatment. They will set up weekly appointments with a doctor, therapist and dietitian. If consultations with a psychiatrist or physical therapist are recommended, patients will set up those appointments at that time.

Binge-eating disorder program

During the initial assessment for the binge-eating disorder program, the phone screener will ask a series of behavioral questions and take a brief health history. If you fit the criteria for binge-eating disorder, you will be scheduled for an in-person assessment to determine if you are ready – physically and emotionally – to begin the group program. Once the in-person assessment is complete, we will contact you with details about the program.
