TULIPS

TULIPS: Helping professionals better care for people with Parkinson's“TULIPS: for better Parkinson’s care,” is a training program developed by Struthers Parkinson’s Center staff for senior residential facilities.

Parkinson’s disease significantly impacts mobility, communication and thinking or memory skills. As our senior population grows, more people with Parkinson’s will seek an environment with staff that understands their unique needs. When choosing a residential facility, families frequently report difficulty finding places that understand Parkinson’s. Staff often is not familiar with the challenges that affect these residents. This lack of understanding can lead to frustration for all involved.

In an effort to meet this unfilled need, Struthers Parkinson’s Center developed the TULIPS program. The tulip is used internationally as a symbol of Parkinson’s awareness. The TULIPS acronym was developed at Struthers Parkinson’s Center to emphasize what people with Parkinson’s need.

The TULIPS toolkit

Our training program is organized into a toolkit, which includes:

  • core training video outlining the special needs of residents with Parkinson’s disease (VHS or DVD format)
  • four PowerPoint training modules for additional in-service training and follow-up education
  • guide booklet and competency assessment tools
  • tulip pins and certificates for those who complete the program
  • TULIPS posters, stickers and stamps to remind staff of the special needs of residents with Parkinson’s

TULIPS toolkits cost $149.99 (plus $5.50 shipping and handling).  For an information brochure or to purchase the TULIPS toolkit, call 1-888-993-5495.
