Urogynecologists

Urogynecologists are obstetrician-gynecologists with additional training to evaluate and treat pelvic floor disorders, including bladder, vaginal, uterine and bowel problems.

Common disorders treated by urogynecologists include the following.

  • Pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the vagina’s normal support is lost, resulting in “sagging” or dropping of the bladder, urethra, cervix and rectum. As the prolapse gets worse, women can feel the bulging tissue protruding through the opening of the vagina.
  • Urinary incontinence. The involuntary loss of urine during strenuous activities (stress incontinence) or preceded by an urge (urge incontinence or overactive bladder) or a combination of these conditions. More information from Park Nicollet Health Advisor.
  • Painful bladder syndrome. Symptoms include frequent urination, irritated bladder symptoms and pelvic discomfort originating from the bladder. An associated term is interstitial cystitis
  • Bowel incontinence. A loss of normal bowel control, also known as fecal or anal incontinence. This leads to leakage of solid or liquid stool or gas, and an involuntary loss of bowel control. This can be due to previous obstetric injuries or muscle and nerve problems.
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections. If you experience more than two infections in six months, you may benefit from more testing to understand the reason for the infection.
