Preparing for childbirth
Good preparation can help your pregnancy go smoothly. Below are some tips and techniques to help you get started.
Kegel exercises are designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. These exercises prepare you for childbirth, promote healing after childbirth, improve bladder control, improve your sex life and correct certain vulvar or vaginal pain problems.
Perineal massage is a technique for increasing the elasticity and tone of perineal tissue in preparation for childbirth. Massaging the perineum daily for the last six weeks of pregnancy may help to avoid an episiotomy, and prevent or minimize tearing.
As you near the end of your pregnancy, you are likely to experience some normal discomforts that signal your baby is growing and your delivery time is near. These discomforts (backache, fatigue, constipation, leg cramps) usually can be managed at home.
Some types of discomfort may not be normal, however, and need medical attention. Be alert to these signs and call your doctor, nurse practitioner or certified nurse-midwife if you experience them.
