Achilles tendon rupture
Your Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body. It connects your calf muscles to your calcaneous (heel bone) and allows you to push off the front of your foot. It can be ruptured (torn) with certain activities, especially running or jumping.
Symptoms
-
Sudden onset of pain while running or jumping
-
A feeling that you have been kicked in the back of your foot
-
Difficulty standing or walking
-
Inability to stand on your toes
-
Swelling and discoloration develop quickly
This injury is most common among men between the ages of 40 and 60. It is very rare in people under age 25.
Treatment
Achilles tendon ruptures can be treated surgically or nonsurgically; both treatments are highly effective. Your doctor will discuss the pros and cons of each treatment method with you. Several weeks of immobilization are necessary with either treatment. Full recovery takes several months; physical therapy plays an important role.
