Emergency center

We try to make a trip to Methodist Hospital's Emergency Center as comfortable as possible.

A visit to Methodist Hospital's Emergency Center can be upsetting to adults as well as children. The following hints will help parents and children handle this stressful time.
  • Parents are encouraged to reassure their children, making sure they know there is no blame for the illness or injury, and that he or she is at the Emergency Center to get better.
  • Make sure children know that hospital staff is there to help them feel better.
  • Make sure the child understands what’s wrong and feels comfortable asking questions. Gear explanations to the child’s understanding.
  • Talk about positive aspects of the visit; for example, they may get a treat or tell their friends about their experience.
  • Parents are asked to tell children where they are going and when they will be back before leaving them in the hospital staff’s care.
  • Tell the child it is OK to cry. Crying is a healthy release of anger, fear and pain.
