One day surgery

We understand that going to the hospital can be scary and confusing for children. Unfamiliar faces, sounds, tastes and smells greet them. Our child-life specialist can meet with parents and children to answer questions and explain what will happen at a one-day surgery visit. We also can schedule a tour of the one-day surgery area before the visit. Call 952-993-0879 at least one week before surgery to schedule a tour.

Before surgery, parents can take steps to make sure the visit goes smoothly, including:

• talking to their child’s pediatrician and surgeon to find out what to expect
• telling their child how the surgery or test will help him or her feel better
• explaining what will happen and how it might feel
• answering questions in a simple way
• listening and acknowledging their child’s feelings and concerns
