Botox®
Botox has become popular as a way to reduce facial wrinkles, giving people a more youthful appearance. If you are looking for a dramatic way to look more rested and content, you may want to consider Botox injections. Botox can reduce or eliminate wrinkles in the upper part of the face, including forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows and crow’s-feet around the eyes.
Botox contains botulinum A toxin, a protein that temporarily paralyzes muscles that weaken and activate wrinkles in the skin.
Are you a candidate?
Ideal candidates for Botox are those who:
-
are in good health
-
want to improve their appearance and have realistic expectations about results
-
have researched and are knowledgeable about the procedure
-
are not pregnant or nursing
Some risk is associated with any procedure. Be sure to follow your surgeon's advice and instructions to help minimize any risks or complications.
Some potential risks are:
-
mild bruising or swelling at the injection site
-
brief headache
During treatment
A microneedle is used to inject small amounts of liquid into areas being treated. During treatment, you may feel a slight discomfort, like a mosquito bite. Anesthesia rarely is needed, but sedatives and numbing agents may be used.
After treatment
Stinging sensations fade quickly after treatment; however, ice compresses can help minimize discomfort. Results generally are visible within three days to five days and last about three months to four months. The injections may be repeated and, with each new treatment, results will last longer.
Recovery
You can return to work or home immediately following the procedure. Care must be taken to keep the head upright. Avoid massaging the treated area. For long-term results, repeated treatments are necessary.
