Spider vein treatment (sclerotherapy)

It is estimated that half the adult female population has spider veins, which are small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on thighs, calves and ankles. Sometimes spider veins appear on the face, making even the best complexion look blotchy and uneven. Spider veins on the face actually are not veins, but blood vessel malformations.

Spider vein treatment, or sclerotherapy, injects a solution into the veins, causing them to collapse and fade. Facial spider veins usually are treated with laser therapy or with hyfercation, which uses heat to seal the blood vessels.

Are you a candidate?

Ideal candidates for sclerotherapy are those who:

  • are in good health
  • have noticeable veins or groups of veins on their legs or face
  • want to improve their appearance and have realistic expectations about results
  • have researched and are knowledgeable about the procedure
  • are not pregnant or nursing
  • do not have a medical condition that affects their heart or circulation
  • do not have a history of blood clots in their legs

Complications, risks

Some risks are associated with any procedure. Be sure to follow your surgeon's advice and instructions to help minimize any risks or complications.
