Treatment and recovery
During treatment
Under bright light and magnification, a solution is injected into each affected vein, which causes the vein to collapse and fade. Generally, one injection is given for every inch of spider vein treated. Cotton balls and compression tape are applied to the injection sites. No anesthesia is needed, and the procedure typically occurs in an outpatient setting, such as a doctor’s office. For the best results, the procedure will take place in two or more sessions, each lasting less than one hour.
Spider veins on the face are treated with hyfercation or laser therapy. Hyfercation uses a thin needle heated by an electric current. The needle touches the veins, and removes them instantly. Laser therapy aims a beam of light at the blood vessels to remove them through the skin. These procedures require no anesthesia and occur in an outpatient setting, such as a doctor’s office. Typically, two or more sessions take place to achieve the best results.
After treatment
Following the procedure, you may be instructed to wear support hose to help the healing process. Your legs may cramp for one day to two days. This is temporary and you should not need medication.
For the first week or two, your condition will be difficult to hide. You may experience redness or swelling, which will disappear within the month. You will need to keep your face clean and perhaps use a protective ointment on affected areas.
