Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts. Women may consider this surgery to:

  • increase breast size by one or more bra cup sizes
  • correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy
  • balance a difference in breast size
  • reconstruct a breast or breasts following surgery

Are you a candidate?

You may be a good candidate for this surgery if you are physically healthy and have realistic expectations for improvement, not perfection, in your appearance. Discuss your expectations with the surgeon before making any decisions.

Two types of implants are available for breast augmentation:

  • implants filled with cohesive silicone gel (a new, thicker type of silicone that is similiar to cutting into a gummybear)
  • implants filled with saltwater (saline) solution

Your consultation

Discuss your expectations with your surgeon and ask for a copy of the implant manufacturer’s information, so you have enough information to make an informed decision. Talk with your insurance carrier about your health care coverage. More about consultations.
