Breast reconstruction (following breast removal)
Breast reconstruction for women who have had a breast removed because of cancer is now possible immediately after a mastectomy. Surgeons can construct a breast to look as natural as possible. Women meet with a doctor to hear about the options available and ask any questions they have about the options or surgery before making any decisions.
Are you a candidate?
Good candidates are women whose cancer has been completely eliminated by mastectomy. Some patients can have reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy. Explore all options with your surgeon before making any decision about surgery.
Some risk is associated with any surgery. Risks with this surgery include:
-
bleeding
-
fluid collection
-
capsular contracture causing breast to feel hard
You can talk about reconstruction as soon as you are diagnosed with cancer. Talk with your oncologist and surgeon about your options, and ask all the questions you need to make an informed decision. Several types of implants are available. Ask your surgeon which one is preferred and the best option for you.
Your surgeon will explain the surgery, complications, follow-up and risks. Breast reconstruction and surgery on the opposite breast must be covered by insurance under federal law. More about consultations.
