Breast reduction
Large, sagging breasts may cause a variety of medical problems. From back and neck pain to skin irritation, breathing problems and skeletal deformities, large breasts can cause physical pain and influence self-confidence.
Breast reduction surgery removes fat, glandular tissue and skin from breasts, making the breasts smaller, lighter and more firm.
Breast reduction surgery usually is performed to relieve physical discomfort rather than for cosmetic improvement. In most cases, surgery is not performed until a woman’s breasts are fully developed, but there are exceptions.
Best candidates are patients who:
-
are mature enough to understand the procedure
-
are healthy
-
have realistic expectations
Some risk is associated with any surgery. Follow your surgeon's advice before and after surgery to avoid these possible risks:
-
bleeding
-
infection
-
small sores around nipples
-
loss of feeling in nipples or breasts
-
uneven or different sized breasts
At your consultation, discuss your expectations with your surgeon. The surgeon will examine and measure your breasts and may take photographs for reference during and after surgery. Photographs may be used for insurance purposes.
The surgeon will discuss variables (age, breast size, shape and skin condition) and where the nipple and areola will be positioned, as they will be moved higher during the procedure. More about consultations.
