Nose surgery
Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, can change the size and shape of the nose, correct a birth defect or help relieve breathing problems.
Are you a candidate?
Think carefully about your expectations before making any decisions.
Best candidates are:
-
people who are healthy and have realistic expectations
-
people who are looking for improvement, not perfection
Age is a consideration — some patients may be too young. Many surgeons, for example, prefer not to work on teenagers until they have finished their growth spurt. They also will make sure the teenager is the one who wants the surgery, not his or her parents.
Complications usually are minor and uncommon when your surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. By carefully following your surgeon's advice, you may reduce potential risk for complications including:
-
nosebleed
-
additional surgery to correct a deformity (usually minor)
Your consultation
During the consultation, your surgeon will evaluate the structure of your nose and face and talk about options. Check with your insurance carrier if your surgery is to correct a breathing problem or deformity, as costs may be covered. Remember to tell your surgeon about any previous nose surgeries or injuries.
