Liposuction

For some people, a fit and well-proportioned body seems an unattainable goal. They diet and exercise, yet some areas do not change much. For these people, liposuction may be an option.

Liposuction can help remove deposits of excess fat that look out of place in proportion to the rest of the body. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, but can help alter body proportion by removing fat deposits that do not respond to other methods. Find out more about obesity. Liposuction cannot effectively treat cellulite. You can have multiple areas of the body treated at the same time if your surgeon feels it is a safe option for you.

Are you a candidate?

Best candidates are people within 25 percent of their normal weight who wish to improve their body contours. (Are you of normal weight? Find out by calculating your body mass index.) Patients can be any age, but those with good skin elasticity achieve the smoothest contour after liposuction, as loose skin usually will not smoothen and contract.

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you want fat removed from any of these areas:

  • cheeks, chin, neck
  • inner knee
  • calves and ankles
  • upper arms
  • breast or chest area
  • back
  • abdomen and waist
  • hips and buttocks
  • thighs
Complications, risks

Your surgeon will discuss any possible complications. Carefully follow your surgeon's advice and instructions to help minimize risks.

Your consultation

Your surgeon will describe the procedure in detail and explain risks and limitations. He or she will discuss anesthesia, scarring, potential complications and cost.

Plan to bring information about:

  • previous surgeries
  • past and current medical conditions
  • medications you take, including herbal remedies and nutritional supplements

Your skin's elasticity will be checked and thickness of the underlying layers of fat will be assessed. Your weight will be checked. More about consultations.
