Description
With the continued rise in overweight and obese children and teens nationally, an increasing number are at risk for type 2 diabetes. According to the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, about 39,000 U.S. adolescents have type 2 diabetes and nearly 2.8 million have impaired fasting glucose levels. Primary care physicians see these health concerns firsthand and need strategies and tools for more aggressive management of obesity in children to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
“Pediatric Diabetes Update” will address improving practice systems for appropriate screening, lifestyle changes to prevent overweight and ways of working with parents to improve outcomes. Attendees will receive an obesity tool kit developed by Park Nicollet Health Services. This conference also addresses blood glucose management in type 1 and type 2 diabetes and issues that can affect appropriate diabetes self-care. This includes medication options, insulin pump therapy, clinician-family communication, eating disorders and dealing with the burden of diabetes care for children and their families.
