Presbyopia
If you find yourself holding reading materials farther and farther away from your eyes to read them clearly, you may be developing presbyopia. Almost everyone will be affected by presbyopia to some degree as they age.
With presbyopia, the eye’s lens flattens and thickens. In young people, the lens is extraordinarily elastic and flexible, but becomes less flexible and eventually gets rigid, making it difficult and ultimately nearly impossible to see nearby objects clearly. People in their 40's often begin to experience some of the symptoms of presbyopia.
To help presbyopia, people can use reading glasses or try bifocal contact lenses and glasses. Eventually, they may want to try a procedure called conductive keratoplasty (CK). CK already is being used to treat farsightedness, and is in a trial phase of being used to treat nearsightedness.
