Foot care

Your feet are a good reason for keeping your blood glucose levels in target. High blood glucose levels affect your heart and circulation. The farthest blood has to travel in your body is to your feet, so poor circulation and nerve damage usually affect the feet and lower legs first. This damage can include numbness, tingling, pain or sores that will not heal.

These problems can become very serious. To prevent them from happening, follow the five steps below. For products to help you with good foot care, visit the Stores @ Park Nicollet online.

Five steps for healthy feet

Step 1
Keep your blood glucose levels in target. The best way to stay healthy and prevent problems is to control blood glucose levels.
Step 2
Practice good foot-care habits. Wash your feet with mild soap and water every day. Dry them completely. Trim toenails straight across. Use lotion if your skin is dry, but don't get lotion between your toes. Wear socks and shoes made from natural materials, such as cotton, wool and leather. Make sure your toes have room to wiggle in your shoes.
Step 3
Check your feet daily. Look them over thoroughly — top, bottom and between your toes. Use a mirror to check hard-to-see places. Look for corns and calluses, ingrown nails, cuts, blisters or cracked skin. If you notice any sign of infection, call your health care provider. Signs of infection include redness, red streaks, swelling, oozing, warm spots and pain.
Step 4
Treat foot injuries immediately. Minor blisters, cuts or scrapes can be cleaned and treated with antibiotic cream. Check daily to make sure the area is healing. Stay alert for signs of infection. If you are unsure how to treat a foot injury, ask your health care provider.
Step 5
Visit your health care provider every three to four months. Remove your shoes and socks to make sure your feet are examined at every visit. Discuss any problems or questions you have. Ask if prescription footwear is right for you. Make sure you have a complete foot exam every year.
