Childbirth preparation

Preparing for childbirth can be an overwhelming undertaking, especially for a first-time mom. The following checklist provides a starting point for planning.

Childbirth preparation checklist

 ___

If you do not have one, select a doctor or certified nurse-midwife (CNM). Meet regularly for checkups and to discuss any questions or concerns you have during your pregnancy.

 ___

Sign up for childbirth preparation classes.

 ___

Understand what to expect during your pregnancy, labor and delivery.

 ___

Before the eighth month of your pregnancy, choose a doctor to care for your new baby. Your obstetrician or CNM can care for you only, not the baby, but can provide recommendations. If you receive obstetrical care from a family practitioner, however, that doctor can care for your baby.

 ___

If you are delivering at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital, complete and return your preadmission form by your eighth month for a quicker check-in on your delivery day. (You receive this form at your 24-week appointment.)

 ___

Consider your infant feeding options.

 ___

Research and purchase a car seat and be knowledgeable in its proper use.

 ___

Purchase breastfeeding and baby care supplies.

 ___

Arrange transportation to the hospital and include a back-up plan.

 ___

Make a list of important phone numbers.

 ___

Pack your suitcase.
