Parkinson's rehabilitation program

Parkinson’s disease rehabilitation program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to caring for patients with Parkinson’s disease. The comprehensive treatment program is designed to meet individual patient needs. Program components may include instruction in walking or moving safely, functional mobility (bed, wheelchair, kitchen and more), activities of daily living (dressing, grooming and more) cognitive and perceptual skills (awareness, judgment, recognition and understanding), speech and language skills and safety and judgment. Patients and their families also are provided with information about the progression of Parkinson’s disease and are referred to resources at Struthers Parkinson’s Center. Therapists will recommend appropriate adaptive equipment or techniques based on patients’ functional status. The program can be provided in all phases of care, from inpatient to home-care to outpatient.

Inpatient care

Patients receive therapy once or twice a day, as appropriate. Often, the rehabilitation team recommends patients be admitted to the inpatient rehabilitation unit for intensive therapies and rehab nursing care. An inpatient support group is offered weekly for patients on the unit to address their social and emotional well-being and their family’s.

The rehabilitation team meets regularly to discuss the patient’s progress and goals. Ongoing communication on the plan of care is shared with patients and their families. The conference serves to collectively review progress and determine appropriate options and timelines for discharge. The therapy team will help obtain necessary rehabilitation equipment for patients upon discharge.

Home-care

If patients are discharged home and considered homebound, team members provide services within their own environment. When patients are ready, the home-care team helps with the transition to outpatient therapy, if appropriate.

Outpatient services

Outpatient therapy builds upon patients’ previous therapy program if they received inpatient care or home-care. Therapists complete an evaluation and establish an individualized treatment plan with patients and their families. Therapists work with patients to determine the frequency of therapy sessions.
