Health care products and medical supplies that may be recommended, or received during your clinical visit, are an important part of your self-care. Products billed or paid for separate from a clinic visit, and not all products are covered by insurance. You will be asked to pay with cash, check or credit card for those items that are not traditionally reimbursed by insurance plans. Please review the following information for products and supplies that may qualify for insurance coverage.
What will my insurance pay for?
Park Nicollet Health Care Products is proud to offer a full-service billing department to help you get the most from your insurance benefits. No up-front payment is required for products that may be covered by insurance. An attempt will be made to bill your insurance company for the full benefits available to you. Items not traditionally covered by insurance will require payment in full at the time the product is issued.
Most insurance plans will pay for at least part of the cost of health care products or medical supplies when your physician prescribes them according to a specific medical condition and need. However, having a physician prescription does not guarantee that the item will be covered. Payment structures vary within every insurance plan. Co-payments often are required and deductibles also vary within each plan. While Park Nicollet Health Care Products has contracts with a majority of area plans, it is not possible to know exactly what your plan will pay for until the insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOB) is sent to Park Nicollet after billing the insurance company.
After we receive the EOB statement, Park Nicollet Health Care Products will then send you a bill for the portion of the item cost that insurance did not cover. In general, the amount you will pay, often referred to as your "co-insurance," will be about 20% of the listed price for the product. However this varies greatly by health plan, product and medical need. And you may also have a deductible that would require you to pay the full price for the product. If you did not pay out-of-pocket for your product, you can expect to receive a bill from Health Care Products.
What questions should I ask my insurance company?
We advise you to call the customer service line for your insurance company to understand specific benefits for the items you need or have already received. You should always be prepared to share with them your medical condition or diagnosis and the specific product(s) you are receiving. Here are some questions you might ask for further clarification:
- Is Park Nicollet Health Care Products a participating durable medical equipment provider for my insurance plan?
- What percentage or amount will my insurance pay for? Will I have a co-pay? If so, how much will it be?
- What other costs might I be responsible for?
- How often can I get new items or refill supplies?
