Symptoms of anorexia

Anorexia symptoms involving eating could include:

  • Extreme dieting, food rituals and fasting
  • Avoiding whole food groups or skipping meals
  • Eating only low-calorie foods or using gum and water to feel full
  • Feeling tense during meals or refusing to eat with friends and family
  • Obsessing over food and eating (constantly talking about food, calories or fat)

Social and behavioral anorexia symptoms could include:

  • Exercising too much to make up for eating
  • Constantly weighing yourself
  • Layering clothes to cover up weight loss
  • Spending more time away from other people and feeling depressed or irritable
  • In denial about getting help

Anorexia symptoms related to self-image include:

  • Distorted body image
  • Low sense of self-worth
  • Intense fear of being overweight
  • Low self-esteem relating to being too thin

Physical symptoms of anorexia include:

  • Extreme weight loss, hair loss, dry skin or brittle nails
  • Dizziness, feeling light-headed, weak muscles
  • Slowed heart rate or low blood pressure
  • Women stopping menstrual period
  • Low testosterone levels in men
  • Lower body temperature or constantly feeling cold
  • Fine hair growth on your body and face
