About Us: Project Better Gown

New hospital gown better for patients

Through 22 focus groups centered on creating a better patient experience, Park Nicollet received feedback on how uncomfortable and embarrassing the current hospital gowns can be. Thus, Project Better Gown was born. A competition was launched to see who could create the best hospital gown that could provide all the functionality doctors need with the experience patients want.

What resulted is a wrap-style design, still allowing quick and easy access for clinicians yet giving the patient more coverage and privacy. The gown has a "kangaroo pouch" in the front for personal belongings and patients' hands, as well as short sleeves and side ties that allow the gown to fit patients of all sizes.

“We believe by creating a better hospital gown, we will create a better experience for our patients.”
– Christa Getchell, President, Park Nicollet Foundation

“We approach the process of redesigning the hospital gown with sensitivity and humility because of how important the gown is to a patients’ recovery, both in terms of functionality and comfort.”
– Linsey Gordon, University of Minnesota design student
