Sue's story of giving

Sue's sotry of givingSue Henderson has been taking care of people for a very long time. “I became a nurse at Methodist Hospital in the spring of 1970,” she says. “I’ve always been proud to work here.”

Over those 45 years, Sue has served in a number of areas at Methodist, including 17 years in the ER. Currently she’s clinical nursing director for the RN Float Pool, Nursing Support Services and the Centralized Transport Team.

Patient care has been the central focus of Sue’s career. But she cares about – and cares for – another large group of people. Her Park Nicollet “family.”

“I’ve volunteered for Caring for Colleagues for 15 years,” she says. “It’s a wonderful Park Nicollet Foundation program that helps team members who are experiencing a personal or family crisis.”

“Caring for Colleagues is available to all Park Nicollet team members,” she explains. “People face all kinds of crises. Life can take a sudden turn and get out of control for any of us. Tragedies like a sudden death in the family. A car accident. A spouse or partner who walks out. An abusive relationship. A house fire. Homelessness. A cancer diagnosis. Caring for Colleagues helps in practical, immediate ways in all kinds of situations.”

Each year Park Nicollet Foundation provides nearly $120,000 in emergency assistance to nearly 150 employees and families. “Caring for Colleagues is carefully administered,” Sue says. “A team member applies through our Spiritual Care or Foundation office. You must work here for a year before you can apply. A committee verifies that it is an authentic, legitimate crisis, and not a financial management issue. Funds can’t be used for medical or legal bills. In fact, the person doesn’t receive any cash; the Foundation directly pays approved bills.”

Giving to Caring for Colleagues and the Park Nicollet Foundation is a regular part of Sue Henderson’s life for a number of reasons. “I give through payroll deduction and a majority goes to Caring for Colleagues,” she says. “We’re so fortunate to work for an organization that puts ‘Head + Heart, Together’ to help people through difficult times. People we know and work with every day.

“Sometimes we don’t understand all that Park Nicollet Foundation does. We think it’s only for rich people who can give large donations. But everyone can be a part of this. It’s caring for people. And it makes a wonderful difference.”
