Family-Based Therapy

Family Based Therapy (FBT) is an outpatient treatment focused on mobilizing parents as a primary resource in treating children and adolescents with eating disorders. In this video, Melrose Center clinicians, Dr. Marcus Westerman, and Kelly Senesac, LMFT, explain FBT in detail, in addition to hearing from a family.

Family (parents, spouse, siblings) will often be included in therapy sessions and are very involved. Family also has the opportunity to join the cafeteria experiences and family meals. We also know family and friends may need additional support of their own. We offer a living recovery group monthly, an extensive list of books and websites, and a family resource center on the first floor.

For those with a loved one in our intensive residential or residential program, visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; and 4 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Our objective is to give families the tools to raise their confidence and skills in dealing with their child's eating disorder. This is also an opportunity to gain support from other families with children of similar ages, in similar circumstances.

Family learning series

Family learning series

Family Learning Series provides in-depth learning in a supportive environment. Parents and their child or adolescent who is receiving care at Melrose, attend a two-hour session together, once a week for four weeks at a time. Families participate in both Creating Family Unity and Creating Family Resilience to develop foundational skills in supporting the healing process and explore deeper concepts designed for family growth.

Eating disorders impact the entire family. Gain confidence in supporting your child and feel supported by other families experiencing the same things.
