My Areas of Practice
I am a clinician at heart with clinical interests in general gastroenterology along with colon cancer screening and prevention. I also have interests in medical economics and medical education. My interests in gastroenterology stem in large part from my experience with my mother being diagnosed with colon cancer. After delaying her initial screening colonoscopy until age 58, my mother eventually underwent the procedure and was found to have an early colon cancer. Fortunately, since this was an early colon cancer, she was able to have this cured with simple surgical removal of the involved part of her colon. She is now 72 years-old and otherwise healthy. Sharing this experience with my mother made me realize that gastroenterologists are in a position not only to change the natural course of disease but indeed, to cure disease.
My approach to patients is geared towards helping them to become engaged in their care. Learning the fine art of capturing the respect and trust of my patients by being honest with them and by helping them to understand and to be involved in their care, thereby creating a therapeutic partnership, has been a large part of my professional growth. The shared experience with my mother along with the tutelage of my ongoing professional clinical experiences have taught me many things including the importance of excellence, compassion, partnership, modesty and integrity, core values which I espouse and have integrated into the consciousness of my daily clinical practice.
