CIDP support for members

If regular muscle weakness and fatigue affect your daily routines, one possible cause is chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). This neurological disorder is caused by an immune system response that damages the protective coating of your nerves. As a result, you lose muscle strength and sensation.

Fortunately, treatments are available that can help stop CIDP’s progression, promote recovery and improve your well-being. And as a HealthPartners member, you can also receive additional guidance and assistance to help you further.

CIDP basics

Throughout your body, your nerves are coated with a layer of fat and protein called myelin. This covering helps electrical impulses move easier and faster between nerves.

With CIDP, your immune system mistakenly attacks myelin. This disrupts the electrical impulses your nerves use to communicate. Over time, the damage to your nerves causes your muscles to become weaker and not work as well.

CIDP can be triggered by several causes, though it may be hard to pinpoint a specific one. Some causes include:

  • Chronic hepatitis
  • Diabetes
  • Bacterial infections
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Immune system disorders due to cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Lupus
  • Lymphoma
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Side effects of medicines used to treat cancer or HIV
